I have a fair number of boxes on my LAN, most pretty old. From time to time, of course, I have a failure, and a failure is always a disaster. Most recently I had two systems fail, an ancient FC4 (!) box, and a box that contained my only actual Windows system, although more often it was booted to Fedora and used pretty much only for IRC.
Since it is awfully handy to have IRC on a different box/keyboard/display than the one I am working on, for a while I put my IRC on a Raspberry Pi while I sorted how best to repair/replace the aged Windows box.
That made me think that perhaps I could move other functions to the Pi. If I had a “Pi Farm” with a Pi dedicated to each function, then a failure wouldn’t be such a big deal. By default, Pi storage is SD, and that isn’t so good for stuff that gets written a lot, so external storage is a must. But that leads me to the realization that if the external storage was RAID 1, a failure would now be a minor inconvenience.
