Kano, a computer kit company, is a critical part of the upcoming education reform in the UK that will make coding and programming a requisite part of the curriculum for students between the ages of 5 and 16, from news.sky.com.

“We thought let’s make something that feels like your favourite Meccano or Lego set that’s as ‘at home’ in the classroom as it is in your living room,” says Mr Klein.

Some 13,367 people signed up to back the Kano team through the fundraising site Kickstarter and they raised close to a million pounds to develop the kits which included support from Apple’s co-founder Steve Wozniak.

The kit is powered by Raspberry Pi – a credit card-sized computer that plugs into a keyboard and is installed with Pong and Minecraft. It does not come with a screen, which may put some buyers off, though Mr Klein is optimistic:

“Whether you’re a full-time professional engineer or you clean houses, you probably have a computer in your pocket which governs tons of aspects of your life, how you communicate, how you consume, but importantly there’s one aspect left that no computer allows you to do, which is create, and that’s something everyone wants to do.”
